The Book

Several months after his journey, Donn sat down with Dr. Joseph Egan and recounted his story. Their daily sessions eventually turned into the book Lost On A Mountain In Maine. Aimed mainly at children, the book turned into a phenomenon that has sold thousands of copies every year since first being published in 1939. Donn’s tale of survival continues to resonate with people of all generations, from those who remember the national story first hand to those who are hearing it for the first time.

Since 1972, Lost On A Mountain In Maine has been required reading for every fourth grader that passes through public school in the state of Maine.  As a part of their Maine studies, students read the book and many hear the story in Donn’s words as he continues to visit schools throughout the state to recount his journey.
